Library

July 9th, 2005

We went to the Pekin library yesterday to keep my vow. Last year, the children were signed up for the reading program, but I didn’t get them in to validate their progress until the very last week. So the poor library volunteer got hand cramps writing names for 5 children on 6 coupons and a parade pass, (total of 35 items to fill out), the children had to pick out a book, plus 6 items from the treasure chest each, plus each child had to feed 30 styrofoam blobs to a cardboard bear. Oh, and pick out 6 stickers per child to post on their star on the bulletin board. And fill out entries for the drawing. My head was whirling by the time this was all done, and I said… “NEXT YEAR we will keep up with this and not wait til the last minute.” So far we have. We are in the 5th week of a 6 week program and they are caught up on prizes. Woohoo!!

One of the many great features of the Pekin Public Library is their permanent book sale room. I picked up an Encyclopedia Brown book, and my own hardback copy of Cheaper by the Dozen. I read this book many times year ago, but haven’t had my own copy. James thinks maybe we will try it for our next nighttime read aloud book.

I also found some good books to borrow. There are several picture books with poetry, including one with the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Samuel picked out a new Animorph book, and an Arthur book. Moriah’s selections included an American Girl book. And Toby got a Magic School Bus book. Plenty to keep us busy until next week. Well, at least plenty to keep us busy for a couple days. Or so.

Our sightseeing in Cincinnati consisted of a visit downtown to browse this 4 level used bookstore. (We tried to visit the Taft House too, but that is a different story) Posted by Picasa
